August 6, 2008 Monthly Dinner & Presentation Cultural Paradoxes by Agnes Mura, MA, MCC
As professional coaches, we encounter problems that have a variety of solutions, along with problems that are paradoxes, i.e., polarities or dilemmas that we cannot solve, but instead seek to manage and balance moment by moment. Leaders whom we coach struggle much more often with the latter than with the former. In this evening’s presentation, you will discover a tool for rationally and collectively managing what might initially appear to be intractable contradictions. Secondly, you will learn how to apply ’Paradox Management’ to the contradictory, but also complementary dimensions that distinguish cultures from one another. This will enable participants to deal more effectively with the challenges that a multicultural workforce presents to both coaches and their executive clients. You may want to think of this as training in “Global EQ”, a knowledge area that is highly advantageous to coaches working in today’s diverse corporate environment. In tonight’s presentation you will learn: - To correctly identify paradoxes or dilemmas
- How to analyze and manage paradoxes (and guide your clients to do so)
- Key dimensions that distinguish ethnic and organizational cultures from each other
- How to use key dimensions to solve conflicts, accelerate executive assimilation into a new environment, or support cultural integration projects

Groups meet from 3:30 pm - 5 pm. Limited to 12 people; $15 fee per person. Executive Coaching Methodologies- facilitated by Ken Larson This mentoring group will focus on specific coaching methodologies and tools for coaching C-level executives and C-level aspirants. Participants will be able to understand the executive personality, the environment (executive suite) and confidently adapt their coaching style to meet the needs of their executive clients. They will both learn and be able to apply a variety of coaching tools and methodologies including, the high impact leadership formula, the scientific methodology, Egans's skilled helper model, the Hudson Institute LifeLaunchTM methodology, and some tools and methods developed by Marshall Goldsmith. Participants are encouraged to bring their own favorite methodologies to enrich the discussion group. Session One will examine working with gifted, talented and creative executives. This session focuses on understanding the executive environment, and personality. We will examine coaching the multi-talented, common types of executive coaching. Discussion will include the first of a series of six coaching methodologies, a 456 methodology developed by Ken featuring the Four Executive Responsibilities, the Five Executive Roles, and Six Emotional Modes. Session Two will examine "the leadership formula", a coaching methodology establishing return on investment. This methodology ties improvement in leadership styles directly to organization improvement. Participants will consider business process, resources, leadership skills and traits, applied self-awareness, emotional excellence, pitfalls, and "luck" as part of the equation for business success. Session Three will review three tried and true executive coaching methodologies. This meeting will include a discussion of scientific methods (Diagnosis, Prescription, Planning, and Execution). We will also review Gerald Egan's skilled helper model (Present and Future Scenarios), and the Hudson Institute LifeLaunchTM methodology, which is particularly useful for integrating life coaching with executive coaching. Session Four will examine Marshall Goldsmith's methodology. Participants will be able to incorporate some of Marshall's tools and philosophies into their executive coaching repertoire. Concepts will focus on behavioral change, key stakeholder involvement, information gathering, mini-surveys, peer coaching, and feedforward. Coaching Assessments - facilitated by Maren Vertoch, Steve Heckler and Grace Moniz The Coaching Assessments mentoring group will cover four commonly used assessments including, the MBTI Type Indicator (Meyers-Briggs- Form Q Step II), The DiSC (Personal Profile System), The Birkman Method, and the LPI-360 (Leadership Practices Inventory 360 degree feedback). One assessment will be covered per session. Copies of questionnaires and sample reports for each of these instruments will be distributed to participants in order to better understand the assessment and subsequent reports, along with learning how to interpret reports when working with coaching clients. Participants will also be given the opportunity to pay an additional fee if they wish to complete their own assessment on some of these instruments in advance of the respective mentoring session. Below is a brief description of each of the four assessments to be covered in the mentoring sessions. The MBTI, Form Q Step II, identifies the individuals, psychological type, and explores and identifies their unique personality preferences within their specific type code. This comprehensive tool allows individuals to dig deeper into their preferences and understand more about themselves in relation to others. As a coaching tool, Step II provides coaching clients and teams greater insight into areas of preference and avoidance, which impacts decision making, problem solving, communications and conflict. DiSC Personal Profile System is a tool designed to help individuals understand their behavioral tendencies and how it impacts others, in terms of one's communication and work style. DiSC also assesses how we use each dimension of behavior in a particular situation, while enhancing our effectiveness in accomplishing tasks by improving our relationships with others. The Birkman Method is a multi-faceted assessment that effectively clarifies one's strengths, typical and stress behaviors, motivators, needs, interests, management, and thinking styles. By integrating both behavioral and motivational aspects, this tool allows client's the opportunity to enrich their professional or personal life in areas including, conflict resolution, relationship development, executive/ leadership development, team building, and career planning. The LPI-360, or Leadership Practices Inventory (3rd ed.), developed by J. Kouzes and B. Posner, helps individuals and organizations measure their leadership competencies, while guiding them through the process of applying the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership to real-life organizational challenges. "Observers" (i.e., co-workers, supervisors, etc.), complete a questionnaire rating leaders on the Five Practice areas, followed by a report summarizing responses from all observers.
